GENERAL PUBLIC URGED TO ADHERE TO FIRE SAFETY TIPS AND PRECAUTIONS

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 25, 2018 (SKNIS): On this week’s April 25th edition of “Working for You”, officers from the Department of St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services urged persons to take safety precautions to protect themselves from an outbreak of a fire.

Fire Sub Station Officer, Lesroy Caines, highlighted a number of fire prevention tips that should be employed in and around the household to limit the likelihood of a fire breakout.

Tips include securing curtains and other items away from stoves; keeping matches, lighters and other flammable materials away from children; calling the Fire and Rescue Department in the event of a fire; and not leaving candles unattended.

“It is only for our own safety for us to preserve and protect our pockets,” said Mr. Caines, while noting that it is important to have firefighting equipment in residential households and commercial spaces.

He also said that the Building Board will be taking the initiative of visiting various establishments throughout the island to ensure that they are up to date with respect to fire safety precautions and equipment. These will include having emergency exits, the presence of a fire extinguisher, suppression systems and smoke alarms.

Fire Officer, Louise Clarke, said that the Ministry of Sustainable Development is currently looking into the drafting of legislation surrounding the mandatory possession of firefighting equipment in residential and commercial properties.

“Please to the listening public, adhere to our fire safety tips. It will save us and it will save you. Protect your lives and your property,” Officer Clarke said.
