BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 18TH, 2016 (PRESS SEC) – The 13th Annual Help-a-Child Program Primary School Scholarship Award Ceremony will see the program’s founder, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, present $500.00 each to 60 primary school students in his Constituency (Saint Christopher 7 – Belle Vue to Ottley’s).

“Several entities give support to my efforts, making it possible for me to help so many,” Prime Minister Harris said yesterday, Monday, October 17th, ahead of the 13th Annual Award Ceremony, which will take place at the Estridge Moravian Church in Mansion’s Village tomorrow, Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 from 5:00pm.

The $30,000.00 in bursaries to be presented at Wednesday’s ceremony will bring the value of scholarships awarded under the Help-a-Child Program to $217,500.00. A total of 375 bursaries valued at $500.00 each were given to students in previous years.

“Dr. Harris believes education is the best gift that any parent can give a child,” Ms. Myrtilla Williams, the Help-a-Child Program Coordinator, said during Sunday’s Constituency #7 General Meeting at the Edgar T. Morris Primary School in Tabernacle.

“He knows and understands that the playing field is not leveled for all parents; some have it and some don’t. So he has this program that is designed to assist the financially needy students of the four primary schools in Constituency #7,” Ms. Williams added.

Each year, Help-a-Child enlists the assistance of principals and teachers at the Edgar T. Morris Primary School in Tabernacle, the Estridge Primary School in Mansion, the Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary School in Molineux and the Violet Petty Primary School in Lodge, to identify candidates who demonstrate financial need.

The identification and selection process culminates annually with the Help-a-Child Program Primary School Scholarship Award Ceremony, which is a well-attended event that brings Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris’ kindness and generosity, as well as his Constituents’ high appreciation of him to the fore.

“We can clearly see that he is a man who is serious about education and the advancement of our children,” Ms. Myrtilla Williams said on Sunday in front of a packed room of Dr. Harris’ Constituents.

Former Chief Education Officer Dr. Patrick Welcome, who served as Chairperson for Sunday’s Constituency #7 Meeting, highlighted the Honourable Prime Minister’s background as a scholarship recipient himself.

“The University of the West Indies (UWI), in looking through the region, saw the face of that little boy [a young Timothy Harris] and his potential, and said, ‘Come, my child, come,’ and so he rose up to be one of the best in the Caribbean,” Dr. Welcome said.

In 1988, Dr. Harris graduated from the Cave Hill Campus of UWI with a First Class Honours Degree in Accounting and won the coveted Victor Cooke Prize for Best Accounting Student. In 1992, Dr. Harris graduated from the St. Augustine Campus of UWI with a distinction in the Master’s Degree Management Studies Program.

Following his excellent performance, the University of the West Indies in collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) sponsored Dr. Harris’ participation in the Ph.D. Program involving four universities in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, namely Concordia University, McGill University, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and HEC Montréal.

Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris was sworn in as St. Kitts and Nevis’ third Prime Minister on Wednesday, February 18th, 2015 after leading the three-party Team Unity coalition to a resounding victory at the polls two days earlier.
